Blue
Devils narrowly miss state tournament
Feb. 4 -
Despite winning 37-36 over Gaithersburg, Springbrook narrowly missed
out on the Maryland 4A/3A Region dual-meet tournament. Due to the
fact that Springbrook lost to Paint Branch and Paint Branch had lost to
Magruder, tiebreakers were not working in the Blue Devils’ favor.
They needed to defeat the Trojans by almost 30 points to gain an edge in
point differential, and they were unable to do it. When the dual-meet
tournament starts on Wednesday, Springbrook will not be there. Gazette
Springbrook
seeking shot at post-season
Feb. 2 -
Entering the final week of the regular season, competition is centered
on claiming the fourth and final seed for the Maryland 4A/3A West Region
Duals tournament. At 13-0 with one match remaining, Damascus
has all but clinched the No. 1 seed in Montgomery County, with Northwest
and Whitman, each 10-2, the likely second and third seeds for the Feb.
8 event. Predicting the fourth seed is not quite as easy. Springbrook
(10-2), Paint Branch (10-2), and Magruder (9-2) can each finish 12-2, which
would force the decision makers into tie-breaker mode. Post

Wrestling season
update
Jan. 18 - As the new wrestling
season began in December, coach Rob Wendel took the team to Ocean City
for an early-season tournament. The Blue Devils finished 10th in
a 22-team field, but came back from the beach with a shot of confidence.
Springbrook then took second place at a December dual-meet tournament at
Smithsburg in Washington County, setting the tone for one of its most successful
seasons of late. After soundly defeating Seneca Valley and Watkins
Mill in a home tri-meet last Saturday, the Blue Devils are 10-1 on the
season, behind only Paint Branch in the county’s Division I standings.
The squad is now looking to make some noise in the postseason tournaments.
Next up is Springbrook's own hometown tournament, Grapple at the Brook,
Friday and Saturday Jan. 20-21. Springbrook will host 15 other schools
over the two-day event. Gazette

2005-06 season
preview
Nov. 30 - At
Springbrook, the program has nott yet recaptured the glory years of the
late 1960s. The Blue Devils have won five county titles, but the last came
in 1970. However, last year’s 8-6 mark was a step toward that direction,
and many of the veterans from that squad return this season. ‘‘The
strength of our team is in our numbers,” coach Rob Wendel said. ‘‘We have
most of our team back from last year.” That includes senior Joe Klass
who was fifth in the state in his weight class last season. Fellow seniors
Sergey Golosinsky and Peter Checco -- both of whom placed fifth at the
regional tournament -- hope to better that mark this year. Gazette
