Hurricane Katrina relief efforts
SGA
and NHS - The SGA has teamed up with
the National Honor Society to organize a school- and community-wide fundraiser
to aid Hurricane Katrina victims. The collection of money at student lunches
will continue thru Friday, September 16. There is a jar for each
class in hopes to foster a friendly competition among the grade levels,
just like spirit links. Each dollar will count for one spirit point for
Spirit Week in October. We are also hoping to involve the rest community
by having students post and pass out fliers at local businesses - with
Springbrook as an outlet for donations. Other ideas include hosting a carwash
and holding the annual blood drive earlier in the year. To get involved,
contact Bilqis Rock, SGA Corresponding Secretary.
Football
teams - Springbrook's Varsity and
JV football teams are hosting their regular monthly carwash on Sunday,
Sept. 18. The boys would like to offer 50 percent of the proceeds
from the carwash and any donations they receive to the Hurricane Katrina
Disaster Relief Fund, particulary for supplies for children and youth who
have been impacted in the Gulf region. The carwash will be held at Sandy
Spring Bank on New Hampshire Ave from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Mark your
calendars!
Congratulations

History
in the making - Springbrook featured in the Post
May
10 - Springbrook's history department is featured in a Washington Post
article about how "high school students can succeed on many levels."
The story spends classroom time with Keiran Atwell's on-level and honors
history classes, Maura Ryan's AP history class, and Angela Stevenson's
IB history class. Several Springbrook students, in addition to the
history teachers, were interviewed for the story. Read
the article here.
Springbrook
on Newsweek list of top high schools
May
9 - Newsweek magazine's annual high school rankings has Springbrook rated
as one of the nation's best. In this year's rankings, Springbrook
placed 175 out of the top 1,000 high schools in the country. The
top schools were selected from over 27,000 high schools nationwide.
This year's rank marks a leap forward for Springbrook, which was number

of Springbrook - Richard Montgomery ranked no. 11, Wootton at 17, B-CC
at 29, Churchill at 71, Walter Johnson at 80, Whitman at 107, and Blair
at 154. Springbrook's Northeast Consortium partners Blake and Paint
Branch came in at 354 and 416 respectively. Click

Springbrook
honored as one of
Washington
area's "schools that work"
April
3 - The Washington Post selected Springbrook as one of the "30 exceptional
public and private high schools from across the [Washington Metro] region."
Springbrook was so honored in the article "High Schools That Work" by Jay
Matthews, published in the Washington Post Magazine on Sunday, April 3,
2005.
The
Post received over 300 nominations of noteworthy schools in a survey last
September, then then interviewed education experts, visited schools, and
examined statistics to select 30 of the nominated schools. Springbrook,
Blair, and Walter Johnson were the only MCPS high schools to be featured
in the article.
The
Post praised Springbrook as a school with a racially mixed student body
that has embraced AP and IB college-level course programs. The article
describes Springbrook as a "very large school [with] one of the most experienced
and respected principals in the region, Michael A. Durso." It notes
that Springbrook is a school of great diversity as well as great academic
achievement: "[the school] gave more than 1,000 AP and IB tests last
year, and many of the academic and student leaders are African American,
Hispanic or other minorities." Read
