2007
gymnastics season preview
March
28, 2007 - Holly Uhlenhake is Springbrook’s third coach in three
years. She inherits a team that finished last at the 2006 county meet but
that does have a solid duo in freshman Hanna Brand and junior Melissa Corado,
the team’s top two all-around performers. ‘‘I coach a club team in
the area [Silver Stars] and I’m well aware of the other teams,” said Uhlenhake,
who coached high school gymnastics in Ohio before heading to Montgomery
County. ‘‘Some of my club girls go to Blake, Blair and Walter Johnson so
I have a pretty good idea what those teams are going to be like. We don’t
have the depth Blake has or B-CC has but I think that for us, our top two
girls have a chance to compete. ‘‘Our goal is to learn something
and hopefully we’ll do that well as a team at the end.” more

2006
gymnastics season preview
March
29, 2006 - The Blue Devils lost perhaps the state’s most successful
coach in Jack Leonard. Taking Leonard’s spot is a familiar face in
Heather Hannett, who attended Springbrook High from 1990 to ’94 and performed
under Leonard, who is now running a gymnastics school in Hawaii. He finished
his high-school coaching career with nearly 500 wins. ‘‘I have some
huge shoes to fill,” Hannett said. ‘‘Jack was a wonderful coach, and we
all miss him. I am focusing on teaching the girls new skills on all events,
working on dance moves in the routines, and trying to make it as fun as
I can in the process.”
Hannett inherits a squad
that finished in fifth place at the county gymnastics meet and will be
missing the services of All-Gazette Gymnast of the Year Erin Ostrove, who
graduated. Ostrove is the county’s defending all-around champion. Hannett
does, however, return senior all-around gymnast Amber Hardy, who was an
All-Gazette honorable-mention selection a year ago. She finished 12th in
the all-around competition at last year’s county meet, taking 18th or higher
in all four events, including fifth on the balance beam (9.175). ‘‘We have
a lot of new girls this year, and those who have been a part of the team
in the past have learned a few new skills for this year,” Hannett said.
