Turnabout
- Blue Devils defeat B-CC
May 16 - Revenge
may be a dish best served cold, but the Springbrook girls lacrosse team
took theirs hot and muggy. On a warm Saturday morning, the Blue Devils
cashed in on a chance to pay back Bethesda-Chevy Chase for eliminating
them from last year’s playoffs by winning a rematch in the 4A-3A West Region
quarterfinals, 14-11, in Bethesda. Senior Lauren Kessler scored five goals,
and junior Shannon Connolly tacked on four more in the victory.
‘‘We have had a
lot of upward momentum the last few games, and we have been coming on stronger,”
Springbrook coach Emily Benson said. ‘‘A lot of our juniors have stepped
up on offense, and our passing has been a lot stronger than it was in the
beginning of the season. We were very excited for this game.” Gazette

May 9 - One
of the most intriguing early games will be the quarterfinal between No.
4 Bethesda-Chevy Chase (8-3) and No. 5 Springbrook (7-4) on Saturday. Like
last season, both teams received first-round byes, and like last year,
will play each other in an elimination game. The Blue Devils, led by seniors
Lauren Kessler and Han Nguyen, hope to avenge last year’s defeat. The Barons,
led by the high-scoring duo of Shay Smith and April Cahill - both players
surpassed 100 career goals this season - hope that history repeats itself.

Blue Devils
hold off Churchill rally
Springbrook
11, Churchill 10
May 9 - Taking
command with a five-goal outburst in the first eight minutes of the second
half, Springbrook (7-4 overall record) then hung on for the victory. Churchill
(3-8) mounted a furious comeback late in the game, scoring three unanswered
goals. The two teams battled to a 5-5 tie in the first half before Springbrook
seemingly broke the game open. Blue Devils senior Lauren Kessler scored
twice in their run of five straight goals. The second-half surge clearly
made the difference, and helped the Blue Devils overcome some struggles
in the first half, according to Kessler. ‘‘In the beginning, we were struggling
with our teamwork,” she said. ‘‘We had that one really nice run in the
beginning of the second half that really opened up the game for us.”

Blue Devils
lacrosse owns transition:
Kessler, veterans
lead team to win over Walter Johnson
April 4 - For
Emily Benson, Springbrook’ first-year girls lacrosse coach, the transition
could have been rocky. As the Blue Devils’ third coach in the last four
seasons, Benson was implementing a new style and system on this team. However,
as Thursday’s game against Walter Johnson illustrated, Benson’s lack of
experience at the helm was more than counterbalanced by the experience
of her players. Senior attacker Lauren Kessler scored four consecutive
goals to send the game to overtime, and then senior midfielder Han Nguyen
scored an insurance goal, as Springbrook engineered a 7-5 come-from-behind
victory in Bethesda. more

Gazette 2007
season preview
Mar. 13 - As
another girls lacrosse season prepares to kick off, the buzz around Montgomery
County is the fact that beginning next year, junior-varsity lacrosse will
finally be part of public high school athletics programs. However,
while it is an addition that is welcomed by varsity coaches, and may eventually
help a Montgomery County team to win a state championship, many teams have
spent the past few seasons nurturing unofficial developmental teams in
an effort to increase the level of lacrosse.
The Springbrook Blue
Devils, which suffered a close and disappointing loss to B-CC in the quarterfinals
of the 4A-3A West Region playoffs, will return its leading scorer in Lauren
Kessler. She will be a beacon of stability that graduated several
seniors last season, but returns a large junior class looking for experience.
First-year coach Emily Benson will take over for the departed Koula Strosnider.
