| At halftime, the score was tied: Magruder 17, Keisha
Haddock 17. It never got any better for the Colonels. Haddock scored
a game-high 24 points Friday night, including the 1,000th of her career,
as Springbrook’s girls basketball team remained perfect in Montgomery County
play by virtue of a 67-42 win over visiting Magruder.
Haddock, a 6-foot senior, dominated the paint against
the undersized Colonels, pulling down 11 rebounds and blocking three shots
despite sitting on the bench alongside her fellow starters for the entire
fourth quarter.
Springbrook (11-1), now 8-0 in the Montgomery 4A East
Division, overcame a sluggish start by making a 30-6 run to all but put
the game away by halftime. “We came into the game thinking they would
play a 2-3 zone and double on me, and they didn’t, which is what shocked
us in the beginning,” Haddock said. “But we got over it pretty quick.”
Haddock was unaware of her impending milestone until moments
after the final buzzer. Springbrook coach Tonya Banks “told me to
go back to the bench,” Haddock said. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
The public address announcer then informed the crowd that
Haddock had reached 1,000 with her 22nd point. “We did everything
we could against [Haddock], but she’s a great player,” said Magruder guard
Corinne Owens, who scored a team-high 16 points. “Not having a post
player really hurt us.”
Magruder (6-6, 4-3) has a roster full of guards, which
has been a strength against slower teams but a distinct liability against
sizable opponents. Springbrook, meanwhile, has been given few problems
by anyone.
Lauren Fried scored 16 points and Joia Daniels added 11
for Springbrook. Madupe Megbolugbe scored 12 points for Magruder,
which trailed by only four before Springbrook went on a 12-2 spurt to claim
a 31-17 halftime lead.
