Welcome back Coach Riggs
Gazette, Jan. 18 - After a 20-win season a year ago, the Springbrook girls basketball team is starting to get back to where it was not long ago, for a variety of reasons. After starting the season just 1-4, the Blue Devils have reeled off five victories in their last six games, including a 62-40 win over Richard Montgomery Friday.

But the bigger story is that the boy is back in town. Blue Devils head coach Oliver Riggs Jr. missed the first 11 games of the season recovering from double bypass surgery. For the first half of the season, Springbrook field hockey coach Kearney Francis, who had not coached basketball before, served as the interim boss.
Francis performed admirably, guiding Springbrook to records of 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the Montgomery 4A East Division before Riggs returned Friday night. He was welcomed back nicely, as his team took a 10-point halftime lead and never looked back.

‘‘I had to get back into game mode pretty quick,” said Riggs, who had his surgery three weeks before the season started. ‘‘But once I got back on the sidelines and the team started doing warm-ups, I was automatically back in coaching mode and I started prancing before the game, like, ‘Let’s just get this thing started.’ It was nice that the girls responded the way they did.”

The contributions were spread out, as they usually have been in Springbrook’s winning streak. Sophomore pivot Alessandra Conway-Flore has come on of late, and kept her hot play going with a game-high 19 points against the Rockets. Juniors Ferin Richardson and Jasmine Petty both reached double figures, and 6-foot center Grace French responded well to her promotion from junior varsity, pitching in four points and nine rebounds.

It seems the Blue Devils are back. "‘We have a good mix but we also don’t have too much depth right now, mostly a seven-player roster,” said Riggs Jr. ‘‘But I even noticed from the game I’d went to earlier in the season that this team has heart.”

Gazette 2007-08 preview
Dec. 5 - There’s going to be an adjustment process at the beginning of the season for the Springbrook girls basketball team. It’s just not like last year, or even the years before that.

Last season was a banner one for the Blue Devils, as they went 20-4 before bowing out in the 4A North Region Final to Blake. They were led by the combination of two fantastic senior guards who essentially did it all for them. Point guard Taryn Christian, a first-team All-Gazette performer, was one of the best all-around players in the county, and was among the team leaders in points, rebounds, assists and steals. Her running mate was shooting guard Eryn Withers, who led the team with over 14 points per game.

Not only are they not to be seen with the new-look Blue Devils, but neither is their head coach from a year ago, Oliver Riggs Jr., who had a double-bypass surgery shortly before the season began. In his stead is Kearney Francis, who knows that there’s a lot of work to be done.

‘‘We graduated several excellent players last year,” said Francis. "It’s always tough to project a team’s success — as with any team, depending on how they come together, we could end up anywhere from .500 to being a challenger for the region."  If Springbrook is to make it back to the regional finals and potentially beyond, it will likely do it with a different identity. A year ago, it was a guard-dominated squad. This year, it will depend mightily on two post players, Alyssa Montgomery and Wilize Maleombho. The senior Maleombho actually came on strong towards the end of last season, leading the team in rebounding. But she will become a focal point of the offense this time around.

Along with senior guard Melisa Corado-Williams, the Blue Devils will also throw three transfers into the mix. Junior Ferin Richardson comes over from St. John’s (D.C.), while sophomore Sunny Conway-Flores and Jasmine Grenaway moved over from within the Northeast Consortium. The trio of transfers add depth that the team did not necessarily possess a year ago. "So far, these girls have shown me a willingness to work hard and a desire to be competitive,” said Francis. "I am excited to see what develops.” more . . .

Changes at the helm
Dec. 5 - Last year, Springbrook led the Division 4A East with 17 regular-season wins, and won 20 overall, before bowing out of the playoffs in the 4A North Region final to Blake. They’ve been to even greener pastures, too, like when they went all the way to the state semifinals in 2005, before losing to eventual champion Eleanor Roosevelt of Prince George’s County.

This season, Kearny Kearney takes over as the fourth head coach in four years. She took over because the head coach from a year ago, Oliver Riggs Jr., had double-bypass surgery the Friday before basketball tryouts. The long-time field hockey head coach at Springbrook, Francis officially took over as interim coach. However, as she puts it: ‘‘I am prepared to stay all season, if need be.” more . . .
