Damascus
6 Devils 3
Nov.
5 - Damascus, ranked no. 4 by the Post, barely avoided upset
by scoring the game's only touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Brian Weiss put Springbrook on the scoreboard with field goal in
the third quarter. The Blue Devils played outstanding defense, as
they have all year. The game completed a Springbrook season that
started with high promise and ended with more modest achievements and a
4 - 6 record. more . . .
Devils shut
out Kennedy
Oct.
29 - Springbrook scored 35 to close the door on Kennedy. Harold
Brantley threw touchdown passes to Francis Adeji and Derek Overton.
Adeji also scored after returning an interception, while Nana Ansah and
Justin Brooks ran for touchdowns.

Journal
Oct. 25 - If you were looking for
a display of offensive firepower Friday night, Paint Branch High was not
the ideal destination - that is, of course, unless you enjoy games that
produce a total of 173 yards offense. In what was truly a battle
between defenses, Paint Branch defeated visiting Springbrook, 20-7, thanks
to numerous interceptions, sacks and clutch field position. more . . .
Lightning strikes
twice as Blue Devils overpower Wootton
Gazette,
Oct. 20 - A
72-hour delay in the completion of its Saturday homecoming game against
Wootton did nothing to distract the Springbrook football team. The two
squads returned to Springbrook's stadium Tuesday evening at 5:45, and on
the first play of the resumed game, senior Harold Brantley turned a quarterback
draw on second and 3 into a 43-yard touchdown run, giving the Blue Devils
a 34-0 lead that would hold up for the rest of the game. more . . .
Blue Devils
fall to R. Montgomery
Gazette,
Oct. 6 - Senior Bryan Carter scored Springbrook's
(2-3, 2-3 4A East) only touchdown on a 42-yard return of a fumble by Richard
Montgomery running back Steve Weedon. Springbrook mustered just 70
yards of offense. Credit Richard Montgomery -- after the Rockets were torched
for ann average of 25.5 points in their first four games, the defense tightened
up Friday. The Blue Devils' running backs found no lanes against the Rockets'
front seven, breaking only one run of more than 6 yards.
Springbrook's
JV squad, however, avenged the varsity's loss by defeating Richard Montgomery's
JV 14 - 11. more . . .
Devils defeat
Magruder, 10 - 6
Gazette,
Sept. 29 - The initial stages of
this season have shown that Springbrook's defense appears ready to lead
the team, which was often the case last year, as well. The latest example
was Thursday's game against visiting Magruder, a 10-6 win for the Blue
Devils. It was the third straight game that Springbrook (2-2) held their
opponent to less than two touchdowns. But it was also the fourth straight
game in which the team failed to score more than two touchdowns.
Last year, Springbrook only
gave up 104 points in 11 games, an average of 9.5 points per contest. So
far this fall, the current Blue Devils have bettered that average, allowing
only 30 points (average of 7.5 a game) . . . Four seniors are largely
to thank for that defensive stinginess: cornerback Francis Adeji, middle
linebacker Brian Carter, tackle David Howard, and Louis Woodland, who spends
time at end and outside linebacker. Howard, who along with Woodland is
a Division I college prospect, and Carter lead the team with 18 solo tackles
apiece. Howard also has seven tackles for a loss, 5 1/2 sacks and two forced
fumbles. more . . . |

Springbrook
14, Blair 0
Sept.
18 - The game took two nights, one full of thunderstorms and rain,
the other a picturesque fall evening. But for the Blair Blazers,
neither looked pretty. Blair fought hard on defense, but one
solid Springbrook drive Friday night and a blocked punt Saturday gave the
visiting Blue Devils a 14-0 win. The game, which was postponed Friday
with 10:06 left in the second quarter due to thunder and lightning, was
marked by solid defense by both teams. SilverChips;

Blue Devils
fall to Blake 9 - 0
Gazette,
Sept. 16 - The
burgeoning Blake-Springbrook football rivalry is becoming one of the county's
most intense. And like all good rivalries, it's a turf war. In this case,
better make that a tar war. New Hampshire Avenue is at stake winner
take all, neighborhood bragging rights for a year, "we're better than you".
Isn't that what life is all about, getting one up on your neighbor? more . . .
Blue Devils
suffer tough opening
loss to Sherwood,
15 - 12 in OT
Journal,
Sept. 7 - Limited
to three yards rushing, Sherwood came back from a 12-3 deficit with a 39-yard
field goal and a 32-yard pass to win the game with 4:09 left.
Early
in game the Blue Devils seemed able to run at will. In the
second quarter, Springbrook scored following strip and fumble return by
linebacker Brian Carter. Taking possession at the Sherwood 21, the Devils
scored in seven plays, with quarterback Harold Brantley sneaking in from
the one. But Shaun Robinson, one of Thomas’ outmanned 190-pound linemen,
snaked through the line and blocked Weiss’ extra-point attempt to leave
it at 6-3.
With Nana Ansah (24 carries,
86 yards) leading the way, the Devils took advantage a fumble recovery
by lineman David Howard to go up 12-3 early in the second half. After Ansah
made a first-down reception, Ngozi Nwaneri went off right tackle twice,
gaining 11 the first time and 12 for the touchdown the second. Kicker Brian
Weiss, who boomed through two 45-yard field goals in pregame warmups, then
hit the left upright with his kick. more . . .

Preview:
Blue Devils
aim to build on last year's success
Journal,
Sept. 3 - The
Blue Devils return most of their key players from last year’s 8-3 team,
which finished with a heart-breaking 7-0 quarterfinal loss to eventual
4A champion Damascus. With such experience . . . Springbrook has a solid
chance of advancing beyond the first round. more . . .
Gazette,
Sept. 1 - Last season, Springbrook was one of the toughest teams
in Montgomery County. . . The Blue Devils rattled off seven straight wins
to make the playoffs for the first time since 1994 and eventually finish
the season 8-3, their first winning season since 1999. This fall,
coach Norman Edwards thinks more of the same is within the team's grasp.
