Lacrosse coach
Mark Pim resigns
June 2 - Springbrook
High School has announced the resignation of lacrosse coach Mark Pim.
Coach Pim, who has been the boys lacrosse coach since the program began
11 years ago, has resigned in order to spend more time with his family.
During his tenure at Springbrook, the program has grown from 20 novice
players to a program with 50 players each year who competed with the best
programs in the county. Coach Pim’s replacement will be Springbrook
graduate Darren Murray (1999). Coach Murray has been an assistant
at Springbrook for two years.
Coach Pim’s record
at Springbrook was 81-64 (13-2 this year) with two region finalists (2000,
2007) and three division championships (1999, 2000, 2007). He was
named Gazette Coach of the Year in 1999 and Man of the Year in 2002
and 2007. According to AD Ron Lane, Coach Pim, who also started the
men’s lacrosse programs at Quince Orchard and Seneca Valley , will best
be remembered for being a role model for his kids on and off the field.
Mr. Lane said “ Coach Pim is a gentlemen who loved to teach lacrosse
to young men and young women. He will be missed but we are thrilled
that Darren Murray has agreed to coach the team.” Coach Pim will
continue to run his Blue Devil Lacrosse and Field Hockey camp at Springbrook
this summer and will remain as a teacher at Springbrook in the future.
Blue Devils
fall to Wootton in regional final
May 17 - Two
days before beating Dulaney, 9-7, in the Class 4A-3A semifinals, Wootton
won its second consecutive regional championship with a 15-8 ousting of
Springbrook. While the Patriots’ dream season continued, the Blue Devils
(13-2 record) couldn’t continue the magic-carpet ride that took them to
their best finish in school history. Thanks to a cast of fantastic four-year
seniors, including midfielder Ben Simmons and attackmen Adam Brizendine
and David Abramson, Springbrook put together a string of playoff miracles
to reach the regional final. Gazzette,

Blue Devils
upend Churchill
May 16 - It
wasn’t supposed to end like this for Churchill. Not in the 4A-3A West Region
boys lacrosse semifinals, and not to a team they had just manhandled by
double digits a little over a week earlier. The third-seeded Bulldogs’
11-10 loss at No. 2 Springbrook Monday was made all the more difficult
by their belief that they not only let a big lead slip away, but didn’t
do what they set out to do this spring. Springbrook (13-1) advances
to face unbeaten top-seed Wootton in Wednesday’s regional final. The game
will be played at 7 p.m. at Wootton. Gazette

May 9 - Wootton
is the team to beat when the boys lacrosse playoffs begin in the 4A-3A
West Region. Not only are the Patriots unbeaten, they are the defending
regional champions. But No. 2 Springbrook (10-1 going into Tuesday) is
better, as well. The Blue Devils won their first 10 games this season thanks
to an offense that scored in double figures in each of them. Springbrook
was dealt a harsh reality check in a 15-4 loss to Churchill last Thursday,
but a chance at redemption would be in the cards should both teams advance
past their opening, second-round games. more

Blue Devils
clinch divisional title
April 25
- After Monday’s 17-4 win over Blake, the Blue Devils’ eighth victory in
as many tries this season, the team’s seniors allowed themselves one brief
moment to enjoy something they had never accomplished before. In
the last three years, Springbrook finished second, third and tied for second
in the Montgomery 4A East Division. But the win over their Northeast
Consortium rivals meant the Blue Devils, with one divisional game still
to play Saturday, have clinched the title for the first time since any
of their players have been in high school. Gazette
Springbrook
lacrosse on a roll
April 18 - Since
the Springbrook boys lacrosse team’s four-goal victory over Walter Johnson
before Spring Break, not much has changed. That day, head coach Mark Pim
had declared the team the strongest it’s ever been since he took over,
and the Blue Devils have done nothing to dispel that notion since.
They’ve only played once since then, but it validated Pim’s claim even
more so. Against previously unbeaten Blair last week, Springbrook dominated
throughout, logging 41 shots en route to a 17-3 victory, upping its record
to 5-0 through the season’s first three weeks. "You know what was
happening was that if they would make a save on a shot early on, and their
goalie did make several good saves, but our guys were just relentless in
riding and working hard to come right back at them," Pim said. "It
was exciting because we hoped we could come back and keep things rolling
after a good start and that’s exactly what we did." Gazette
Lacrosse contact
- child’s play for Simmons
April 4 - There
is a certain parallel between lacrosse and football - both require players
to have a certain amount of toughness in order to thrive. Springbrook attacker
Ben Simmons has it in spades. It’s the first thing noticeable about his
game, how effortlessly he runs through and into contact without losing
possession of the ball. For a wide receiver on the Blue Devils’ football
team who made his mark going over the middle, his fearlessness makes sense.
The senior’s attacking style has never translated from the gridiron to
the pitch any better than the start of this season. Through his first four
games, Simmons has nabbed a team-high 16 goals to lead Springbrook to an
undefeated start. His football mentality was best on display last Thursday
against Walter Johnson. After a slow start, during which the Blue Devils
trailed 2-0 after the first quarter, Simmons took matters into his own
hands. In a three-minute, 30-second span of the second quarter, Simmons
gave Springbrook the lead with two goals and an assist. The Devils went
on to win, 10-6. more

Gazette 2007
season preview
Mar. 13 - The
Springbrook Blue Devils, playing in the 4A East Division, have bright prospects
this season. Springbrook is coming off a 6-6 campaign but have only
lost two seniors who received significant playing time. The strength
of the team may lie in its aggressive midfield, comprised of two football
players, Ben Simmons and David Abramson. But its most potent scorer
is also returning, attacker Adam Brizendine (29 goals, 17 assists), as
is fellow attacker Tim Roe (30 points). With most of their top talent
returning, the Blue Devils possess the potential to break into the upper
echelon of county teams. Now it’s only a matter of making it happen.
‘‘The kids feel like we’re in pretty strong position - our challenge is
to get the chemistry of playing together to really go after the top teams,”
said head coach Mark Pim. ‘‘We kind of want to break into that group
and we’ve got the kids to do it. If we put it together, we can play with
anybody in the county.” more
