Post - Garner a big shot
Dec. 6 - C.J. Garner is caught in a paradox. What the Springbrook senior does best on the basketball court has helped his team win and has made him both one of the top scorers in the Washington area and extraordinarily difficult to defend.

Garner has an ultra-quick first step, which allows him to beat almost any perimeter defender off the dribble. He's also tough and shifty enough that he can either negotiate bigger defenders in the lane for layups or induce contact and draw fouls. He averaged 21.1 points per game, and made 70 percent of his 161 free throw attempts last season as the Blue Devils finished 19-4. more . . .

Gazette - Olasewere emerges
Dec. 26 - A few years ago years ago, Springbrook power forward Jamal Olasewere remembers the first time he went up against his current teammate, but then-rival C.J. Garner, in middle school. A year younger, he played for Benjamin Banneker, while Garner was at Francis Scott Key, and he remembers being wowed back then.

He still is, as is the rest of the county left to combat the Blue Devils’ first-team All-Gazette shooting guard night after night. But instead of playing the role of opponent, Olasewere is starting to play the role of multi-talented complement to Garner. And in fact, he is likely the biggest reason for Springbrook’s 5-0 start this season.  more . . .

Gazette - 2007-08 preview
Dec. 5 - As with most teams at the start of the new season, there is uncertainty surrounding the Springbrook boys basketball team. A year ago, they incorporated a brand-new starting five, which led the Blue Devils to a 19-4 record. This year, only one starter remains - 5-foot-10 dynamo C.J. Garner, a first-team All-Gazette guard who averaged over 21 points per game.

Head coach Tom Crowell is excited about his new core, and hopes they can help the Blue Devils go even further than a year ago, when they fell in the 4A North Region semifinals to eventual state champion Sherwood.

They are fairly small, but have two athletic big men in 6-5 Jamaal Olasewere and 6-4 Ebou Touray. Replacing their point guard from a year ago, Othello Banaci, will be two quick guards, Mounda Williams and Chris Carter. Carter will often switch over to the off-guard when Garner leaves the game, while Williams’ younger brother Jeremy should be the team’s best threat from the perimeter. more . . .
