Lacrosse
coach Mark Pim resigns
June
2 - Springbrook High School has announced the resignation of lacrosse
coach Mark Pim. Coach Pim, who has been the boys lacrosse coach since
the program began 11 years ago, has resigned in order to spend more time
with his family. During his tenure at Springbrook, the program has
grown from 20 novice players to a program with 50 players each year who
competed with the best programs in the county. Coach Pim’s replacement
will be Springbrook graduate Darren Murray (1999). Coach Murray has
been an assistant at Springbrook for two years. more

Track
and field regionals
May
23 - Springbrook competitors excelled in the Maryland 4A North
regional meet. Jordan Sawadogo matched the county’s best 400-meter dash
time of the season, winning the event in 49.60 seconds. He also took second
in the 800 run to qualify for states in that event, as well. Other Blue
Devils event winners were Joffrey Alcidor (long jump) and Uchenna Ahaghotu
(shot put). Ahaghotu also took fourth in the discus throw to qualify

Boys
lacrosse falls to Wootton in regional final
May
17 - Wootton won the 4A/3A West Region title, 15-8, against Springbrook,
which entered with just one loss. Wootton went up 10-2 in the first half
on three goals and were dominating every facet of the game. But Springbrook,
which rallied to beat Whitman and Churchill to reach the region final,
netted five straight goals to cut the margin to 12-8 with 7 minutes 30
seconds remaining. more . .

Spring
playoff updates
Boys
Lacrosse - May 16 - It
wasn’t supposed to end like this for Churchill. Not in the 4A-3A West Region
boys lacrosse semifinals, and not to a team they had just manhandled by
double digits a little over a week earlier. The third-seeded Bulldogs’
11-10 loss at No. 2 Springbrook Monday was made all the more difficult
by their belief that they not only let a big lead slip away, but didn’t
do what they set out to do this spring. Springbrook (13-1) advances
to face unbeaten top-seed Wootton in Wednesday’s regional final. The game
will be played at 7 p.m. at Wootton. more
. . .
Girls
Lacrosse - May 16 - Revenge
may be a dish best served cold, but the Springbrook girls lacrosse team
took theirs hot and muggy. On a warm Saturday morning, the Blue Devils
cashed in on a chance to pay back Bethesda-Chevy Chase for eliminating
them from last year’s playoffs by winning a rematch in the 4A-3A West Region
quarterfinals, 14-11, in Bethesda. Senior Lauren Kessler scored five goals,
and junior Shannon Connolly tacked on four more in the victory. more

Softball
- May 16 - After
avenging last year’s first-round loss to Parkville Friday, the Springbook
softball team’s postseason run ended Monday in a 10-0, Class 4A North Region
quarterfinal loss to defending Maryland state champion C. Milton Wright.
Senior pitcher Kelly Callan led Springbrook offensively with a .489 batting
average and five home runs, along with senior shortstop Danica Gordon (.386).
But the Blue Devils (11-7) were unable to put any pressure on the third-seeded
Mustangs Monday. more

Volleyball
-
May 8 - With
its win over Walt Whitman Tuesday night, the boy’s volleyball team (under
the direction of Springbrook graduate Warren Deng) will play at Sherwood
starting at 5:15 Thursday evening in the next round of the County Championship.
Good luck team.
Tennis
- April 23 - Congratulations to Coach White and Springbrook's boys
varsity tennis team for winning their division title.
Track
and field - April 19 - Congratulations
to the coaches and members of the Springbrook track and field team. For
first time in 15 years, the boy’s team has captured the division title.

Boys
lacrosse in the news
Springbrook
takes its best shot - April 27 - With
one game left against divisional rivals, the Blue Devils' senior-laden
boys lacrosse team remains undefeated and has plans to make significant
post-season noise. more
. . .
Blue
Devils earn divisional title - April
25 - After beating Blake 17-4, earning their eighth victory in as many
tries this season, the team's seniors allowed themselves a moment to enjoy
something they had never accomplished before. In the last three years,
Springbrook finished second, third and tied for second in the Montgomery
4A East Division. But the win over their Northeast Consortium rivals
meant the Blue Devils have clinched the title for the first time since
any of their players have been in high school. Gazette

Spring
sports previews
Softball
-Springbrook (11-5) suffered two big personnel losses last year in 25-year
coach John Haberman and catcher Avian Spiller, who batted .321 with 21
RBI and boasted a .965 fielding percentage. But, the Blue Devils,
under the leadership of first-year coach Michael Miller, do return their
starting pitcher, Kelly Callan. And they’ll also rely on returning seniors
Lauren Reed, at first base, and Melaney Cox in the outfield for strong
performances. Gazette
Baseball
-
The
county’s most notable performers include Springbrook pitcher Keith Hessler.
Hessler finished last year with just a 5-4 record, but he had an excellent
2.42 ERA and struck out 78 batters in 52 1/3 innings as the Blue Devils’
ace. ‘‘We need to continue to improve defensively to be successful
this season,” Blue Devils coach Kevin Andre said. ‘‘Also, taking advantage
of run-scoring opportunities will be a key to our success.”
Seniors Danny Green (.3-4, 4.83 ERA) and Nathan Evans (.286 BA, 7 RBI)
and junior Ryan Richman (.318 BA, 13 runs) will help Hessler execute that
winning formula. more . . .
Boys
lacrosse - Springbrook's
boys lacrosse team is coming off a 6-6 campaign but have only lost two
seniors who received significant playing time. The strength of the
team may lie in its aggressive midfielders, Ben Simmons and David Abramson.
But its most potent scorer is also returning, attacker Adam Brizendine
(29 goals, 17 assists), as is fellow attacker Tim Roe (30 points) - more
at team website.
Girls
lacrosse - The girls lacrosse team,
which suffered a close and disappointing loss to B-CC in the quarterfinals
of last year's 4A-3A West Region playoffs, will return its leading scorer
in Lauren Kessler. She will be a beacon of stability that graduated
several seniors last season, but returns a large junior class looking for
experience. First-year coach Emily Benson will take over for the
departed Koula Strosnider - more

Girls basketball
preview
In
his first year as the girls varsity coach, Oliver Riggs inherits a team
that has won back-to-back region championships, so he knows he has the
talent to work with. But he’s ambitious -- Riggs wants more than
just a regional title. He wants to build a legacy. Riggs is talking
about a state championship, something that the Blue Devils have been within
reach of in the past two years, in which they won a combined 43 games,
but couldn’t get. more

Second-year
Springbrook coach Tom Crowell looks out on the practice floor and sees
a gaggle of new, unfamiliar faces. In his debut season with the Blue Devils,
he led a team that surged near the prominence of the 2003-2004 squad that
won a regional title, finishing 18-6 before falling in the 4A North region
semifinals. But nine seniors from last year’s team are gone, so Crowell
has to rebuild from the ground up. ‘‘We’re starting mostly seniors, but
these kids were behind our other kids last year,” said Crowell. more

University, while left-handed pitcher Keith
Hessler is headed south to play baseball

Springbrook
wrestling is getting ready to build on last season's success. Last
year, the team posted a regular-season record of 12-2, completing one of
their best records in school history, but just missed qualifying for the
Regional Dual-meet championships. ‘‘We have a pretty good group of returners,”
said head coach Rob Wendel, entering his 13th year as the Blue Devils’
coach. ‘‘Though it will be hard to fill some of the weights left by seniors
last year.” more . . .

850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville. The exact time of the testimony
will be published on Thursday, October 12. Each testimony is limited

to work being done on our field.
2006 fall
sports previews:
Field hockey
- Springbrook had the best season, in teerms of playoff success, of any
public-school field hockey team in 2005, reaching the 4A state final before
losing, 3-0, to South River. The Blue Devils (14-3 last year) lost nine
seniors from that squad but 13 seniors will step up to take their place,
including All-Gazette first-team selections Lauren Kessler and Hanh Nguyen.
. . Other key players are center midfielder Danica Gordon, senior forward
Yuri Sin, and senior defender Carly Gordon, Danica’s twin sister. more
. . .
Football
- Varsity head
coach Rob Wendel seeks to build on last season's 5-5 record. The
Blue Devils feature seven starters returning to the offense and eight to
the defense. Junior LB Darius Hill was the team's leader in sacks
last season, and will get a boost from senior LB Kevin Robinson, who transferred
from Blake. more . . .
Boys soccer
- Springbrook will build from the back tthis season, with three returning
starters on defense. Senior Augustine Vandy will also likely be pulled
back into defense from the forward role he played last year, further strengthening
an already experienced unit. ‘‘Our defense looks to be pretty strong,
so I think we’ll be in good shape,” coach John Haigh said. ‘‘Overall, I
think things will be really good. They really look like a team, and I think
they’re going to perform much better this year.‘‘ more
. . .
Girls soccer
- Springbrook has won only one game in tthe last two seasons, but coach
Maria Ciasca is confident the Blue Devils are ready to make their move.
They graduated only one senior from last year’s squad and will look to
senior Allison Bundock and junior Joanna Garcia for scoring production.
Senior Beth Hagler will lead the team’s back line. more
. . .
Girls volleyball
- Springbrook coach Melissa Truman may bbe in her first year, but she is
not without experience. As a senior at Delaware State University,
Truman served as an assistant coach on the women’s volleyball team, and
hopes to bring some of that skill to the Blue Devils. ‘‘We have a
lot of veteran players that have played well in our early scrimmages,”
Truman said. ‘‘Considering that the varsity is [made up of] mostly juniors,
there is a lot of potential. . . ‘We feel like we’re ready to have
a great year,” Truman said. more

Haberman
retires from coaching
June 21 - John Haberman
has become synonymous with Springbrook High athletics in the last 25 years.
Though he has coached at various schools during his 37-year Montgomery

Great

out-going
but irreplaceable Booster Club co-presidents
June
10 - Over the past four years, Laurie and Larry Checco have provided
fantastic leadership of Springbrook's Booster Club. Through their
energetic and unflagging dedication to Springbrook athletics, the Booster
Club has helped to support a period of incredible success for all Springbrook's
sports programs, including a state champion field hockey team (2003); a
state championship in gymnastics (2003); a boys basketball team in the
state finals (2004); hugely successful girls basketball teams (regional
finalists or titles 2003 - 05); a regional cross-country title (2004);
and a divisional title in swim & dive (2004). The Checcos' tremendous
committment and efforts have brought about great improvements in athletics
facilities and resources, not least of which are the school's new stadium
lights. Now that sons Brian and Peter have graduated (classes of
04 and 06 respectively), the Checcos will be stepping down and turning
over things over to David and Terry Pena. Thanks Laurie and Larry,
