Great
thanks to Laurie and Larry Checco,
out-going
but irreplaceable Booster Club co-presidents
June
10 - Over the past four years, Laurie and Larry Checco have provided
fantastic leadership of Springbrook's Booster Club. Through their
energetic and unflagging dedication to Springbrook athletics, the Booster
Club has helped to support a period of incredible success for all Springbrook's
sports programs, including a state champion field hockey team (2003); a
state championship in gymnastics (2003); a boys basketball team in the
state finals (2004); hugely successful girls basketball teams (regional
finalists or titles 2003 - 05); a regional cross-country title (2004);
and a divisional title in swim & dive (2004). The Checcos' tremendous
committment and efforts have brought about great improvements in athletics
facilities and resources, not least of which are the school's new stadium
lights. Now that sons Brian and Peter have graduated (classes of
04 and 06 respectively), the Checcos will be stepping down and turning
over things over to David and Terry Pena. Thanks Laurie and Larry,
from all of the members of the Booster Club for a great four years at the
helm!

April
7 - Congratulations to the track and field team for their performance against
Wootton on Wednesday. The boys' team is currently undefeated while the
girls' team continues to show their dominance in the sprint events.
The team was led by Brainerd Erwaharien, Nick Oates, Chauncey Manson, William
Bell, Sharif Kronemer, Victoria Morton, Cameron Pitt and the girls 100
and 200 meter relay teams.
Booster
club mulch sale
Thanks
to a true SHS community effort, the Mulch Monster was slain Saturday, April
1, at approximately noon -- hours in advance of when most mulch slayers
thought the Monster would gasp its last. Our many thanks to all the students,
staff, coaches, parents and the PTSA who not only made it happen,
but made it seem so effortless. Many eager hands made the day. Even
Mr. Durso broke into a sweat. It was a FABULOUS accomplishment. In all
we sold 3,015 bags of mulch, gossed over $12,000, netted more than $4,000
for SHS. Again, many thanks to all those who made this day possible--and,
we dare say, even fun.

Wrestling
season update
Jan. 18 - As the
new wrestling season began in December, coach Rob Wendel took the team
to Ocean City for an early-season tournament. The Blue Devils finished
10th in a 22-team field, but came back from the beach with a shot of confidence.
Springbrook then took second place at a December dual-meet tournament at
Smithsburg in Washington County, setting the tone for one of its most successful
seasons of late. After soundly defeating Seneca Valley and Watkins
Mill in a home tri-meet last Saturday, the Blue Devils are 10-1 on the
season, behind only Paint Branch in the county’s Division I standings.
The squad is now looking to make some noise in the postseason tournaments.
Next up is Springbrook's own hometown tournament, Grapple at the Brook,
Friday and Saturday Jan. 20-21. Springbrook will host 15 other schools
over the two-day event. more

Examiner -
Last year's record 4-6;
Coach Rob Wendel (1st year). Once a powerhouse, Springbrook has only
two winning seasons in 10 years. Turnaround is imminent however as 140
players reported for practice. "I can't explain it," said Wendel. "One
thing we did was get the word out about practice. And this freshman class
looks very good." This year's fortunes will ride on three-year starting
QB Harold Brantley. Derrick Overton and Adou Kouadio, the top back on an
8-2 JV, are competing at tailback. Brantley has inviting targets in agile
TE/DE Darryl Kornegay (6-3, 255) and speedy WR/CB Nick Oates. Walter Brown
(5-11, 255) and Mark Davis (5-9, 225) will play both ways on the line.
