Lauren Kessler makes Junior Olympic field hockey team  
July 2005 - Lauren Kessler, class of 2007, was recently named to the AAU Junior Olympic field hockey team as a goalkeeper. This came after her performance at the National Field Hockey Futures tournament, where she only allowed one goal (a penalty stroke) in five games. As a result of this honor, she will be playing in the national tournament in New Orleans in August. Congratulations, Lauren!

May 23 - The Athletic Department held the spring awards night to honor spring sports teams and student-athletes.  Several Blue Devils have earned post-season all-star honors:

Regional track meet 
May 19 - Congratulations to Springbrook's boys and girls track teams for their strong performances at the regional meet.  The boys placed 5th overall and the girls took 11th.  Outstanding individual Blue Devils performers were: Emmanuel Elomobor - 2nd place 110 hurdles; Francie Boakye-Adjei - 3rd long jump (just short of school record), 4th place 100m;  Cameron Pitt - 2nd place high jump (6'2"); Tuonlay Youh - 4th place 100m; Christina Washington - 2nd place, 15'8"; Girls 4x100 - 3rd place, Larissa Rodney, Tuonlay Youh, Kavei Murangi, Dionne Wilson; Boys 4x100 - 1st place, Victor Nwaneri, Emmanuel Elomobor, Nana Ansa, Franci Boakye-Adjei (fastest time of the year 43.91).

Erin Ostrove makes All Met gymnastics team
May 16 - Congratulations to Erin Ostrove for being named to the Washington Post All Met Gymnastics team for 2005.  more . . .

Lacrosse playoffs
May 16 - Springbrook's boys lacrosse team handily defeated Paint Branch, 13-6, in first round playoff action.  Game report here.  But in the second round, the Blue Devils were overpowered, 17-3, by a tough Churchill squad.  more . . .   The girls defeated Wootton in round one, 9-8, in two overtime periods.  Springbrook then advanced to face Sherwood, which defeated the Blue Devils, 14 -11.  more . . .

Baseball and softball playoffs
May 16 - In round one, Springbrook's baseball baseball team beat Magruder, 7-6, scoring the winning run on a batter hit by a pitch with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning.  In the following round, Springbrook's post-season run ended with a no-hit loss to Gaithersburg, with the final score of 8-0.  more . . .  The Blue Devils softball team began its post season with an easy victory over Churchill, 11-0.  Advancing to the next round against Damascus, the team fell 3-2.  more . . .

State gymnastics championships
May 11 - Congratulations to Erin Ostrove, who won first place at the Maryland state meet in three events - vault, beam, and floor exercise - and third place in all-around.  Kudos also to Amber Hardy for solid performances on bars and beam.  The meet was coach Jack Leonard's last state meet before retiring to Hawaii. more . . .

Volleyball playoffs
May 12 - Springbrook's boys volleyball team lost 3-1 to Seneca Valley in the first round of the Maryland state playoffs.  The team finished the season with an outstanding 12-2 record.

Erin Ostrove wins county gymnastics championship
May 5 - Congratulations to senior Erin Ostrove for winning the county gymnastics title.  Erin took first place in the All Around, Floor, Beam, and Bars with scores of over 37 points in each event.  more . . .

Volleyball preview
Mar. 30 (Gazette) - Springbrook's coed team is off to a 2-0 start this season. Senior setter Sheriene Modeste, and senior outside hitters Nhi Ly and Lily Tidrow are part of the experienced returning girls portion of the team and will be large contributors on the floor for the Blue Devils. Returning senior Bobby Wiley will also be a strong player this year as well as two newcomers, sophomores Robert Orton and Khoa Ly.  more . . .

Mar. 30 (Gazette) - Coach Jack Leonard will start his last sseason at Springbrook, moving to Hawaii after 32 years coaching gymnastics in Montgomery County.  This season's Springbrook team features Erin Ostrove (All-Gazette and second all-round at the state meet last year), Amber Hardy, and Julie Argue. more . . .

Baseball preview
Mar. 23 (Gazette) - Springbrook must replace departed ace Jason Hessler, but it does return junior outfielder Harold Brantley (.411, 17 stolen bases, 24 runs) and sophomore pitcher Keith Hessler (4-1, 2.50 ERA, 43 strikeouts).  "In order for us to be successful this season, we'll need to improve defensively," Blue Devils coach Kevin Andre said.  more . . .

Softball preview
Mar. 23 (Gazette) - After advancing to the 4A West Region fiinal last season, Springbrook (13-8) returns only two players. Senior Laura Dillon is the only returning starter and will be on the mound for the Blue Devils. Junior Avian Spillner came up from the JV team to play catcher midway through last season and is the only other returning player for coach John Haberman. more . . .

Mar. 17 (Gazette) - Springbrook starts the season with severral new faces, especially among the coaches.  Koula Strosnider takes over a squad that finished last year at 5-7 and has plans to "do things differently this season." more . . .

Mar. 17 (Gazette) - One of the Montgomery County teams hopinng to break through this season is Springbrook.  The Blue Devils were a hair's breadth from winning the 4A East last year.  Despite several key graduation losses, Springbrook hopes to improve on last year's one-and-done playoff performance. more . . .

Girls basketball team's outstanding season ends at 22-4
Mar. 10 - Springbrook's girls basketball team ended a fabulous season deep into the playoffs, losing to Eleanor Roosevelt 62-41.  The Blue Devils conclude the 2004-05 season with a 22-4 record, and as Maryland's 4A regional champ and state semi-finalist.  Congratulations from the Springbrook boosters, athletic department, and the entire school community.  Special thanks go to coaches Tonya Banks, Susan Trella, Geoffrey Finch, and Renee Hudson, and seniors Lauren Friend, Chantel Friend, Keisha Haddock, and Lauren Dillon. more . . .

Basketball playoffs
The girls team received a first round bye and will host the winner of Richard Montgomery vs Churchill (Tuesday, March 1).  If Springbrook beats the winner of that game, we will host the next round game on March 3 at 7:00pm.  Previews - Examiner, Gazette

County wrestling championships
Feb. 20 - Springbrook finished 11th out of 23 teams.  Top Springbrook wrestlers included Joe Klass (placed 3rd at 152 lbs), Peter Checco (5th at 140), David Abramson (6th at 171).  more at team site

County swim & dive championships
Feb. 19 - Heather Alvord finished 3rd in 500 free and 100 back.  Rachel Glasser came in 2nd in the 100 fly and 3rd in the 200 free.  Jeff Lue came in 15th for 200 free.  The boys 200 medley relay placed 10th, and the boys 400 free relay took 14th.  The girls 400 free relay placed 16th. Overall, Springbrook came in 18th with 89 points.  The girls placed 16th with 67 points and the boys placed 20th with 22 points. more at team site

Springbrook girls basketball readies for playoffs
Feb. 17 - No. 9 Springbrook already has clinched the Montgomery 4A East division title and one of the top two seeds in the Maryland 4A West Region playoffs. But Blue Devils Coach Tonya Banks said her team won't take it easy in two of its toughest regular season games, tomorrow against No. 8 Gaithersburg and Tuesday against No. 6 Paint Branch.  Read full Post report here

Feb. 8 - They're long, lean and pony-tailed.  They come at you in waves.  They're interchangeable and indispensable.  Together they are a potent force for the Montgomery 4A East champions.  Go to the Examiner for full story

Keisha Haddock scores 1,000th career point
Jan. 21 - Senior Keisha Haddock scored her 1,000 career point with the Blue Devils and finished the game with 24.  more at the Journal, Gazette

Springbrook 2nd Annual Holiday Tournament
Dec. 28-29 - The Blue Devils hosted some very exciting basketball at Springbrook's second annual Holiday Tournament.  The boys team lost its first round game, 67-69 to a tough Northwest squad, but won the consolation game, 59-55, against Gaithersburg.   more . . .  The girls team opened with a tremendous 72-20 win over Northwest.  In the championship game against Gaithersburg, ranked 18 by the Washington Post, the girls lost in overtime, 62-64.  more . . .

Fall Sports Awards
Springbrook's Athletic Department held its Fall Sports Awards night Monday, November 22.  Highlights of the evening were the honoring of the boys cross country team for winning the division title and the recognition of twenty student-athletes for earning a 4.0 GPA.  Team Awards were announced for Most Outstanding, Most Improved, Blue Devil Spirit, and Scholar-Athletes. more . . .

Field hockey completes late season resurgence
Nov. 2 - Springbrook upended Magruder, 1-0, in the first round of the state playoffs. See game report.   Although they lost in the second round, 3-1 to Whitman, the Blue Devils rebounded from a rough begining this season and completed terrific a late-season rally to finish with an overall record of 7 - 6.  more . . .

Varsity football shuts out Kennedy
Oct. 29 - Blue Devils score 35 to close the door on Kennedy.  Harold Brantley threw touchdown passes to Derek Overton and Francis Adeji, who also scored by returning an interception.  Nana Ansah and Justin Brooks ran for touchdowns. more . . .

Lightning strikes twice at homecoming 
Oct. 20 - At the homecoming football game, the Blue Devils struck before and after a 72-hour interruption caused by lightning.  In the end, Wootton fell 34 - 0. more . . .

Ice hockey season opens with win over Roosevelt
Oct. 15  - The Blue Devils on ice defeated Eleanor Roosevelt, 7 to 1, in the first game of the season.  The Devils were in control throughout the home ice (Wheaton Arena) win.  Next game is against Good Counsel, Friday Nov. 5.  more . . .

Cross country team enjoying terrific season
Oct. 6, 2004 - The Cross Country Team has concluded the division meet part of its season. The boys team finished 5-0 and won the division championship.  The girls team finished with a 4-1 record and placed second in the division. more . . .

Boys soccer ends scoring draught with 3 - 0 win over Blair
Oct. 6 -  Until late in the game against Blair, tied 0 - 0, Springbrook had only scored just two goals through five games. Then, relatively speaking, the floodgates opened.  In the 56th minute, the Devils scored, and in the 63rd minute, they did it again.  To top it all off, they found the net one more time in the 70th minute. Just like that, Springbrook nabbed a 3-0 win over the host Blazersmore . . .

Football update: Devils fall to R. Montgomery, 7 to 14
Oct. 6 - Senior Bryan Carter scored Springbrook's (2-3, 2-3 4A East) only touchdown on a 42-yard return of a fumble by Richard Montgomery running back Steve Weedon. more . . .

Springbrook football defeats Magruder, 10 to 6
Sept. 23 - Quarterback Harold Brantley scored a touchdown in the second quarter and Brian Weiss kicked a field goal in the third quarter to preserve the win.  more . . .

Field hockey team set to defend state championship 
Kearney Francis's resurrection of the Springbrook field hockey program came full circle last fall as the Blue Devils captured their first state title with a thrilling, 3-2 overtime win over Quince Orchard in the 4A championship game. more . . .

Springbrook could factor into the 4A East race; the Blue Devils got off to a blistering start last year before falling off the pace. Head coach Mustapha Minteh is hoping to build on the positives from last season.  more . . .

Football program seeks to build on last season's success
Last year, Springbrook's football team made its first trip to the state playoffs since 1994, narrowly losing to eventual the state 4A champ, Damascus.  The team's accomplishments also included a final record of 8 wins 3 losses, a first ever game under the new stadium lights, and several post season All-County selections.  Stay tuned for news about the up-coming season.
