Q. How is the Booster Club connected with Springbrook's stadium lights?

A.  Springbrook's stadium lights were installed in late fall 2003.  The Booster Club was instrumental in organizing the drive to have the lights installed, and took on the responsibility to raise funds to pay for the lights.

Q.  Why did the Booster Club choose stadium lights as its first major project?

A.  For several reasons:

1.  Once Rockville High School gets lights installed as a result of its upcoming renovation, SHS would have been the only high school in all of Montgomery County without stadium lights.

2.  Having stadium lights will enable our entire student body to attend or play in nighttime outdoor sporting events, as well as help us to begin building community and school spirit, like other Montgomery County schools.

3.  Having stadium lights will enable us to take advantage of the  significant revenues these sporting events generate, revenues that every other high school in Montgomery County uses to support its sports programs.

4.  In addition, raising money for these lights has generated a great deal of enthusiasm and participation throughout the entire Springbrook community, including parents, students, teachers, alumni and local business. So far, we've found this to be absolutely the case.

Q.  SHS is a public school.  Why do we have to raise the money.  Why doesn't the county pay for them?

A.  Other county high schools with lights have faced the same situation we're currently in with respect to having to pay half the cost - which in our case is $65,000 over a 10-year period.  Given the status of education budgets in these hard economic times, we shouldn't find this too surprising.

Q.  Is this money only for lights or will any other sports/activities benefit?

A.  Our obligation is to raise $6,500/yr. for the next 10 years to pay for our share of the lights.  Anything raised over and above that amount will go to support SHS athletic teams and their activities.  Last year we raised $13,000 - $6,500 will go to our first installment, $2,000 has been placed in reserve, and the remainder has been given to the Athletic Director to spend on what he sees as priority needs.

Q.  What is the Booster Club's relationship with GoBlueDevils.net?

A.  The Booster Club sponsors GoBlueDevils.net for the benefit of Springbrook High School athletic programs and other school groups.  The Club is not responsible for the content of GoBlueDevils.net, or to links to any other sites.

Q.  How can I get more information about the Booster Club.

A.  There's plenty for all of us to do to make SHS one of the premier high school in Montgomery County. Installing stadium lights is just the first step.  We encourage you to attend Booster Club meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 pm in the SHS cafeteria, or you can contact Larry or Laurie Checco at 301-384-7101.
