Mulch help needed this Saturday, April 5th
Students and parents needed
to move the mulch monster!! We have been collecting mulch orders
for weeks for the sale on April 5th (Saturday, 9-2) at White Oak Middle
School.
Now we must prepare distribute
so many bags to our great supporters—friends, neighbors and Springbrook
families who have placed orders. We need TRUCKS, DRIVERS, STUDENTS:
the strong, the willing, the just-plain-energetic - you know who you are.
(Sorry, only adults may drive the delivery vehicles, but we need lots of
student strength to move the mulch and unload deliveries.)
Which Springbrook team will
move the most mulch? Show your spirit. Help school sports. We'll have pizza
and water on site. Please let us know who you are and what you are
willing to help with.

9 - The Maryland State Athletic Director's Association (MSADA) and
the Athletic Directors of District 2B (Montgomery County Public Schools)
are pleased to announce that Ronald Lane, Athletic Director at Springbrook
High School, is the 2007-2008 recipient of the District 2B Athletic Director
of the Year Award. Mr. Lane has served as the athletic director at
Springbrook High School for 12 years and has been an inspiration to student-athletes,
parents, staff, administration and the entire Springbrook community.
He has also been a strong colleague to the other 24 athletic directors
in MCPS. Mr. Lane excels in all aspects of the athletic director
position and is a true Blue Devil at heart. Gazette
Boys
basketball preview
Nov.
28 - As with most teams at the start of the new season, there is uncertainty
surrounding the Springbrook boys basketball team. This year, only one starter
remains from last year's 19-4 team - 5-foot-10 dynamo C.J. Garner, a first-team
All-Gazette guard who averaged over 21 points per game. Head coach
Tom Crowell is excited about this season, and hopes they can help the Blue
Devils go even further than a year ago, when they fell in the 4A North
Region semifinals to eventual state champion Sherwood. They are fairly
small, but have two athletic big men in 6-5 Jamaal Olasewere and 6-4 Ebou
Touray. Replacing their point guard from a year ago, Othello Banaci, will
be two quick guards, Mounda Williams and Chris Carter. Carter will often
switch over to the off-guard when Garner leaves the game, while Williams’
younger brother Jeremy should be the team’s best threat from the perimeter.

Girls
basketball preview
Dec.
5 - Last year, the 20-4 Blue Devils were a guard-dominated squad. This
season, it will depend mightily on two post players, Alyssa Montgomery
and Wilize Maleombho. The senior Maleombho actually came on strong towards
the end of last season, leading the team in rebounding. But she will become
a focal point of the offense this time around. Along with senior
guard Melisa Corado-Williams, the Blue Devils will also throw three transfers
into the mix. Junior Ferin Richardson comes over from St. John’s (D.C.),
while sophomore Sunny Conway-Flores and Jasmine Grenaway moved over from
within the Northeast Consortium. The trio of transfers add depth that the
team did not necessarily possess a year ago. more

preview
Nov.
28 - While it would be presumptuous to call the Blue Devils the team
to beat, they will certainly again be right at the top of its division.
They have gone 25-3 since 2005-2006. "We have really raised the bar as
far as our expectations go, especially the last two seasons," said Springbrook
head coach Rob Wendel. "We would like to continue to improve and go deeper
into the duals, and place higher in the state tournament. A very difficult
and challenging task, [but] we are really looking forward to the opportunity."

Devils named to All-Gazette teams
Nov.
28 - Congratulations to Shannon Connolly
for being named first team All-Gazette in field hockey; Darius
Hill, first team All-Gazette in football; Richard
Steinwand, first team All-Gazette in golf; and Idrissa
Seisay, second team All-Gazette in soccer.
Fall
sports awards
Nov.
19 - Springbrook's Athletic Department held its fall awards night on
Monday, November 19 in the Springbrook cafeteria to honor its fall sports
teams. Hosted by seniors Sharif Kronemer and Pritha Shah and sponsored
by the Springbrook Athletic Booster Club, the affair is “catered” by our
parents with a pot luck style dinner being served. In front of the
largest crowd in memory, all 385 fall student-athletes were recognized
for their contributions in sports and in the classroom. Special recognition
was given to the field hockey team for being the co-division champion and
to cross country member Sharif Kronemer and golfer Richard Steinwand for
qualifying for the states. Springbrook also recognized 5 of
its former coaches for their long-term contribution to the athletic department.
Plaque with their pictures will hang in the hall by the Behrmann Gymnasium
to honor them. They were Bob Milloy, John Haberman, Tom Crowell,
Don Rushing, and Jim Castonguay. Finally, the highlight of the evening
was the announcement of 17 student-athletes for earning a 4.0 GPA. Click
here for award winners.
State
cross country meet
Nov.
10 - Congratulations to Sharif Kronemer who ran in the state cross
country meet this past Saturday. Sharif came in 14th out of 161 runners.
Girls
basketball coach Riggs takes leave
Nov.
10 - Due to health concerns, varsity girls basketball coach Oliver
Riggs has temporally stepped down as coach. While he recuperates, Kearney
Francis will be the interim coach. Coach Francis is a veteran coach and
teacher who we feel will do an outstanding job in Coach Riggs absence.
Coach Riggs hopes and expects to return before the end of the season.
Marching
band needs help
Sept.
7 - The Springbrook High School Marching Band is facing an emergency
situation and we need your help. Due to significant growth in our music
program as well as the normal wear and tear on marching band uniforms,
we are over 50 uniforms short for the upcoming
marching/football
season. Unless we order enough new uniforms to erase this deficit now our
children will not be able to march for the full marching season this fall.
We
are fortunate to have been offered a matching grant from SHS Alumni Rick
Rudman and Bob Lentz. Both were members of the Class of 1979 and participated
in the SHS Marching Band. For every $1 we raise, Rick and Bob will match
it with $2 - essentially tripling the donation! That leaves approximately
$3,400 that we must raise in order to make the match.
Without
your support the band will march in t-shirts until it is too cold to march
in that attire. With your help they will be able to support our football
team at all games and participate proudly in other marching opportunities
throughout the next season. We are half-way to our ultimate goal of raising
$20,000 - that's $400 per uniform - by November to outfit our band fully.
Please
help our students and community by giving generously to the Springbrook
Marching Band! Remember that every $1 you give translates into $3 for the
band thanks to the Rudman-Lentz Matching Grant.
To
donate, deliver/mail your check to:
Springbrook
High School, Instrumental Music Department,
201
Valley Brook Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20903.
Please
be sure to write "SHS Instrumental Music Department" on the memo line of
your check.
Thanks
for helping to keep the Springbrook Marching Band in step!

Booster Club Mission Statement:
The mission of the Springbrook
High School Booster Club is to employ the time, talents and resources of
our parents, students, teachers, friends and corporate citizens to benefit
the athletic programs of Springbrook High School, and ultimately, the entire
student body. In addition to raising funds to help achieve this mission,
our ultimate aim is to build a stronger Springbrook community where all
of us are valued partners in preparing our young people to become responsible,
well-educated, well-rounded, productive citizens.
The best way to keep up and
stay involved in your child's life and community is by joining the booster
club. The club meets the first Wednesday of every month when school is
in session.
